Jean-Paul Gaultier is a renowned French fashion designer. A man of great talent and self-taught, he began as a design assistant for Pierre Cardin in 1970. His first independent collection was shown in 1976. Known for his ready-to-wear, streetwear-inspired clothes, Gaultier did not tackle 'couture' until the 1990s. His approach was gender-oriented; in the early years he was often referred to as the enfant terrible of French fashion.

In addition to designing for his own labels, Jean-Paul Gaultier has been creative director at Hermès since 2003 . In 2014, Gaultier announced that he would no longer make ready-to-wear, but would focus on couture and perfume collections.

Fragrances were launched in 1993 with Jean-Paul Gaultier, later known as Classique. Le Mâle appeared in 1995 and Fragile in 1999, and all three were known for their unusual compositions and innovative packaging.
