In 1888, he patented a waterproof and breathable fabric he had invented, called gabardine. Garments made from it were very practical when in use. They were appreciated, among other things, during Roald Amundsen's expedition to the South Pole. Waterproof padding sewn from this fabric was also worn by officers serving on the fronts of the First World War.
